What I’m Reading: Rong Lu offers a top pick
In a recent issue of Nature, Fan Zhou, Bing Liu and colleagues present their work on tracing the developmental origin of blood stem cells, also known as hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), in mice. Interestingly, grafts of single HSC precursor cells from 11-day-old mouse embryos showed quite different capacities to repopulate the blood. Analysis of gene Read More…

Researchers harness the power of genome editing to track cell lineages throughout zebrafish development. To read more, visit News from The Scientist, and News from Bio Techniques.
Bone Marrow Transplant Success Depends on the Dose
Casey Brewer, Ph.D., and colleagues in the laboratory of Rong Lu, Ph.D., discovered that transplantation dose affects the behavior of the blood-forming stem cells in bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). To read more, visit Gen news
Dose of transplanted blood-forming stem cells affects their behavior
Unlike aspirin, bone marrow doesn’t come with a neatly printed label with dosage instructions. However, a new study published in Cell Reports provides clues about how the dose of transplanted bone marrow might affect patients undergoing this risky procedure, frequently used to treat cancer and blood diseases. In the study, USC Stem Cell researcher Casey Read More…

Rong Lu’s lab receives an Eli and Edythe Broad Innovation Award in collaboration with Keyue Shen’s lab
Rong Lu and Keyue Shen have won one of the inaugural Eli and Edythe Broad Innovation Awards in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at USC. The team will pioneer an “organ-in-a-dish” approach for studying the stem cells in bone marrow.
